By
Khaled HosseinEarlier this year I read
The Kite Runner. Like his previous book, this story again takes place in Afghanistan and spans some 50 years ending just a few years ago.
Where as
The Kite Runner followed the lives of two boys, this book follows two women who end up married to the same man. As the story stays in Afghanistan, it details life during the invasion of the Russians, the Taliban, and their removal.
I enjoyed the story and I enjoy the way Hossein really brings alive the daily life of the two women, Mariam and Laila. I found the The Kite Runner was the more uplifting of the two books. This book seemed to be about sorrow. The women's husband Rasheed treats them horribly almost everyday of their marriage to him. At the end of the story there is a glimmer of hope for the characters, though until Afghanistan rebuilds itself I guess that the hope will only remain a glimmer.
