All Four Engines Have Failed

All Four Engines Have Failed
By Betty Tootell

The true story of BA 009 that flew through volcanic ash over Indonesia in 1982. Lost all four engines in cruise at night. Eventually got the engines restarted starting around 15,000 feet.

As told by an author who was a passenger and interviewed many of the passengers to give a tale about what they all were thinking during the flight.

There in lies the problem with this book. It wasn't that the writing was poor or uninteresting. I was riveted throughout the book. Unfortunately the rivets periodically came a bit loose. It was that we, the readers, got to hear the thoughts of every person on board. A play by play account. It was a bit tedious to read. And not enough from the pilots. But maybe that's just me. It was nice there was also a bit on the aftermath, about the plane and what happened with the passengers after they diverted to Jakarta.

It was an interesting story not that well told. What is amazing is that this book goes for $80+!  For a paperback.  Check out the current price on Amazon here.  Maybe because it was a small printing? The book is out of print. I snagged it for a low price of $20 with shipping. Read the free version, aka Wikipedia, here.
