By Laurie King
The premise of the book, according to the back cover, was the combination of two of Laurie King’s mystery novel series. Now I’ve read the Mary Russell novels, where she has married Sherlock Holmes and goes on adventures with him and I’m a fan. But, I found that this was a modern day San Francisco detective story and not really to my taste. The parts in the book about Philip Gilbert’s house being made over to be of the 19th centaury to imitate Sherlockian London were interesting. As was the Sherlock Holmes pastiche. As for the rest? I agree with the Seattle Times “fan’s of Martinelli will find much to enjoy.” I’m not a fan.
After I finished the book, my mom, who gave this one to me, told me that she didn’t much care for it either. I wanted to ask, so why did you give it to me?? Oh well, here’s to hoping for a dedicated Mary Russell novel in the future.
Happy Mother's Day!
